Report summary
The country relies heavily on LNG and oil imports to meet its energy needs: Japan's domestic oil and gas production makes up for around 0.3% of the country's oil supply and around 2.2% of the total gas supply in 2023. Japan was the world's largest LNG importer for 51 years until China surpassed it in 2021. Japan briefly regained the top spot in 2022, but China once again surpassed it in 2023.
