The Utica is one of the oldest and most expansive black shale plays in the US. It is thought to be the source rock for conventional, Cambrian-aged conventional systems in the region. The formation transitions from dry gas (east Ohio) to rich gas, to oil (west and central Ohio) over a distance of just 160 kilometres (100 miles). High TOC values have been recorded in every production window. The Ordovician-age Utica shale features substantial variations in both thickness and depth. The play is found directly below the Lorraine formation and overlies the Trenton Limestone. In Ohio, the Point Pleasant is the primary target and producing interval.
