Report summary
The Ucayali Basin is Peru’s premier gas province and contains several organic-rich Palaeozoic formations with shale gas potential, including the Cabanillas, Ambo and Ene formations. Unconventional exploration remains at an early stage, with the principal evidence of shale gas potential coming from Maple Gas’s Santa Rosa-1X well in Block 31-E, where gas-bearing Devonian shales were identified in 2009. Despite a proven gas-prone petroleum system and existing infrastructure associated with the Camisea development, no commercial shale gas production has been established. As a result, unconventional opportunities in the basin are currently viewed as a longer-term resource option rather than a near-term development priority.
