South Africa is a net importer of road transport fuels and relies significantly on its robust import infrastructure. The country’s largest refinery, the 180 kb/d SAPREF refinery, closed indefinitely in 2022, and the country’s reliance on imports to meet demand has risen. There are over 5,000 service stations countrywide, and approximately 90% of the total retail network falls under one of the six major brands; Engen, Astron Energy, Shell, BP, TotalEnergies and Sasol. Outlets are predominantly focused in the densely populated areas of Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng – the economic hub of the country with over a third of the total retail network and about 40% of demand.
