Tongon is an open pit operation that utilises conventional mining methods. The plant comprises gravity concentration, flash flotation and carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits. Plant capacity increased in 2013 from 3.6Mt/a to 4.2Mt/a. Optimisation of the crushing circuit was expected to increase mill throughput further to around 4.8Mt/a. The South Zone (SZ) pit is the main sulphide feed for the mill within three active zones, namely the pit bottom, southern and western pushbacks. In the North Zone (NZ) pit, mining is focused on the higher-level oxide benches and transitional ore. In 2020 drilling will be carried out on strike extensions of the NZ and the Mercator project, in addition to other targets within a reasonable haulage distance.
