Meet Sylvia Leyva Martinez: the new host of Interchange Recharged podcast

Driving the solar revolution and breaking barriers in the energy industry

4 minute read

We're excited to introduce Sylvia Leyva Martinez, the new host of our Interchange Recharged podcast. Sylvia brings her expertise in solar energy, a passion for renewables and a commitment to driving meaningful conversations about the energy transition. With a strong background in energy consulting and solar research, she is set to elevate the podcast with data-driven insights, diverse perspectives, and compelling discussions on the future of clean energy.

In this Q&A, we get to know Sylvia, her journey into the energy sector, the challenges she has overcome and what listeners can expect from Interchange Recharged under her leadership.

Tell us about your journey into the energy sector and what led you to focus on solar and renewables?

Sylvia:"I would say that my journey into the energy sector was more of a calling rather than a journey. Back in Mexico, I studied Engineering Physics. While I loved the intellectual challenge, I wanted something more practical. That’s when I pursued a program in 'Traditional and Renewable Energy' in France and first fell in love with solar."

I think solar is the most 'democratic' and available energy source which is why I decided I wanted to dedicate my life to solar.

My master’s thesis was on the feasibility study of solar energy cooperatives in Mexico. When I returned, I began my career in energy consulting. Although I wanted to work in renewables, the industry was still heavily focused on oil and gas. I spent my early years traveling to small oil towns and working with national oil companies. A few years later, a former colleague invited me to join WoodMac, where I gradually transitioned from oil and gas to power and renewables consulting, eventually focusing on solar research."

As a woman in the energy industry, what challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

Sylvia: "Energy is a predominantly male-dominated industry, particularly in oil and gas. One of my biggest challenges early on was establishing credibility and ensuring my voice was heard, especially when I was the only woman in the room.

Most of the work I had to do to face this challenge was internal. It involved lots of self-reflection and convincing myself of what I know and the value I bring to the table. Overcoming imposter syndrome isn’t easy, and it’s something I continue to struggle with at times.

Being more active in external conferences and increasing my exposure to senior clients has greatly helped, and has, more often than not, validated that my research is important and relevant."

What are you most excited to bring to the Interchange Recharged podcast?

Sylvia: “I’m excited to bring more data-driven insights on what and who is driving the energy transition. I’ve engaged with many stakeholders in the solar industry as part of my work, and I'm eager to bring depth to complex energy topics. I also want to ensure we highlight the incredible work that women in energy are doing by featuring them on the podcast.”

Where do you see the biggest opportunities and challenges in the solar and renewables sectors right now?

Sylvia: "The biggest opportunity is solar's ability to meet high energy demand in the near term. It's economic, clean, and can be paired with battery storage for reliability.

As for challenges, they lie in managing policy uncertainty, particularly in the US, and transmission and interconnection issues."

What kind of discussions and topics can listeners expect on Interchange Recharged?

Sylvia: “Oof – anything goes! While I am focused on solar, I’m thrilled to explore all aspects of the energy transition. In the pipeline, we have discussions on microgrids, batteries and major industry events like the Solar and Energy Storage SummitRE+ and the Hydrogen Conference.

I encourage listeners to send in topic and guest suggestions. You can leave us feedback on X or Bluesky we’re @interchangeshow."

What do you think needs to be done to increase female representation and leadership in the energy sector?

Sylvia: “There needs to be more awareness from people in leadership positions about the need for equal participation of men and women. From an organisational perspective, realistic and targeted policies for inclusion can be really helpful, as well as structured mentorship programs.”

For those who want to hear more from you, where can they follow you and keep up with your work in solar and renewables?

Sylvia: "You can follow my work on LinkedIn – that is where I typically post about my latest research and Interchange Recharged episodes, and opinions about market dynamics affecting solar and the renewable industry."

As Sylvia takes the reins of Interchange Recharged, listeners can look forward to insightful discussions on the future of energy, with a particular focus on solar and renewables. Her unique perspective as a woman in a male-dominated field promises to bring fresh voices and ideas to the forefront of the energy transition conversation.
