Horizons Live: No country for old fields

Why high-impact exploration is still needed

1 minute read

Long seen as the lifeblood of the oil and gas industry, exploration now faces an existential crisis. Under intense scrutiny on both environmental and economic grounds, investment has plummeted.

So, is there still a case for exploration? The world is already short of advantaged barrels – those with the lowest costs and lowest carbon emissions. Exploration will still play a role, even if we see a faster-than-expected retreat from oil and gas under an accelerated energy transition scenario.

Following this month’s report, the Horizons Live session replay examines the potential for high-impact exploration to:

  • lower the cost of oil and gas to consumers
  • cut carbon intensity
  • add value for both resource holders and explorers.

However, successful high-impact exploration requires the stars to align on multiple factors.

Watch the Horizons Live replay as our expert panel discusses the topic in detail.

Our panel:

  • Gavin Thompson, Vice Chairman, Energy – Europe, Middle East & Africa
