Commodity Market Report
North America coal short-term outlook March 2024
Report summary
Coal-fired generation will remain low through spring as natural gas will be kept cheap to avoid storage containment issues through the shoulder season. Domestic coal suppliers have begun to feel the sting of falling prices, as several high-cost mines closed in March. However, stronger supply curtailments will be needed, as utilities continue to build stockpiles, despite deferring deliveries.
