Qatif is a super-giant oil field that is located predominantly onshore in eastern Saudi Arabia. The field was discovered in 1945 with production starting in 1946. Qatif is composed of north and south domes, with the northern dome extending into the shallow offshore of the Persian Gulf. The field was shut in during the mid-1980s, as demand for OPEC crude fell and its members cut back production. Qatif was selected for shut-in due to its high hydrogen sulphide content.
